What are YouTube Shorts?

If you've been spending time on YouTube lately, chances are that you have come across the latest addition to their app - YouTube Shorts. Designed as a response to the soaring popularity of TikTok, YouTube Shorts is a short-form video platform that allows users to create and share 15-second videos.

With its launch, YouTube joined the growing club of social platforms, including Instagram and Snapchat, offering their versions of short-form video content. However, despite being the latest sensation, YouTube Shorts isn't as great as it seems. Here's why.

Issue #1: Limited Creation Tools

While YouTube Shorts boasts of content creation tools, they are significantly limited compared to TikTok. With TikTok, creators have a range of features including text overlays, filters, special effects, and more. In comparison, YouTube Shorts provide very few customization options.

Since the platform is still in its early stages, there is a high probability that more features will be added to the app as time goes by. But currently, the lack of such tools makes it challenging to create quality content, resulting in generic videos all over the platform.

Issue #2: Fewer Exploration Options

YouTube Shorts' content discovery model is relatively simple. To access Shorts, users need to go to the YouTube homepage, and then search under the hourglass icon. However, these videos do not appear on your subscription feed or any recommendation lists.

While the search bar model works with YouTube's existing model of categorizing content, it means the Shorts creators will not have a chance to appear on anyone's homepage or "Explore" page. In contrast, TikTok's algorithm recommends content to users based on their interests and activities on the app, making it easier for creators to get discovered and reach a wider audience.

Issue #3: Limited Monetization Options

One of the most significant draws towards platforms such as YouTube and TikTok is the creation of content and monetization opportunities. While this is possible on Shorts, the platform offers limited monetization options at the moment.

Creators can monetize their Shorts video content using ads, but they can only earn money from it if they are part of the YouTube Partner Program. The challenge here is that new creators are not eligible for the program, making it impossible for them to benefit from their Shorts content fully.

Issue #4: Competition with other Platforms

Finally, the newest issue to watch out for is the likelihood of competition with other platforms. Before YouTube launched Shorts, TikTok was the primary platform for short-form content. However, since YouTube launched Shorts, other platforms have also released their versions of the feature.

Instagram has recently launched its TikTok competitor called "Reels." With this addition, there is already fragmentation in the short video market. This may lead to audience fatigue and reduce the chances of loyal users sticking to one platform.

So, are YouTube Shorts Worth It?

While the concept of shorter video formats has potential, YouTube Shorts has proven to have limitations. With the current lack of new and exciting creation tools, a limited monetization program, and fewer exploration options, this may be why the platform isn't gaining as much traction as other platforms. However, it is still early days, and perhaps YouTube will address these issues over time.
